What if curriculum design is localised?

This approach helps teachers to develop a curriculum best suited to the learners it is designed to educate. Here are the five elements of the curriculum design approach.

Curriculum Design

The Five Elements

A vision is
clearly defined.
Capability frameworks
are devised.
A Question Mark
Capabilities have
learning progressions.
Conceptual frameworks of understanding are used.
Curricula are memorable & meaningful

1

1

A vision is clearly defined.

Which means that we as teachers
Think deeply to clearly articulate what we believe is our defining purpose as educators; our key objectives or ultimate aims.
So that our learners
Are learning about a curriculum that is designed around what is best for them.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Go to a school that is the best fit for them.
  • Have a curriculum that is designed specifically for them.
  • Have an education that is purposeful & meaningful.
  • Have their school make decisions that fit with the vision.
  • Be learning in a well informed school, that uses up to date educational theory and research.

2

Capability frameworks are devised.

Which means that we as teachers
Break down our vision to identify the specific capabilities our learners will need for the vision to be realised.
So that our learners
Will be learning and developing the capabilities to be the best they can be.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Develop what they need to be the best they can be.
  • Have a curriculum that works for learners now while also setting them up for a happy and successful future.
  • Have clarity around what qualities, dispositions & skills they will be developing while at the school?
  • Learn in programmes designed to grow the capabilities.
  • Be able to see how learning in school benefits them in life.

3

3

Capabilities have learning progressions.

Which means that we as teachers
Use our professional knowledge and experience as well as other useful resources, to identify and outline how the capabilities we have chosen develop over time.
So that our learners
Will be able to use the curriculum to learn what they need, when they need it and at the right level for them.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Have greater clarity of the capabilities they are developing.
  • Understand what they are already good at or strong in.
  • Identify what they need to work on or prioritise next.
  • Be able to work at their level, regardless of their age.
  • Be able to talk about their progress and achievement in the capabilities.

4

Conceptual frameworks of understanding are used.

Which means that we as teachers
Define the concepts we want our learners to understand and break them down into a framework of developmental progress.
So that our learners
Build conceptual frameworks of understanding around multi-disciplinary concepts that they can use to help them make sense of new and unknown contexts.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Develop & deepen understanding of the world around them.
  • Be learning at the level of understanding that is right for them.
  • Have enough understanding of important concepts to be able to cope when faced with new & unknown contexts.
  • Be learning about multi-disciplinary concepts rather than isolated concepts.
  • Have clarity around what they are learning and how it connects.

5

Curricula are memorable & meaningful.

Which means that we as teachers
Create whatever is needed to make our curriculum memorable and meaningful for our learners.
So that our learners
Can understand the curriculum well enough to have increasing ownership over their learning.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Understand the curriculum well enough to take ownership of it.
  • Make connections to the curriculum from year to year.
  • Have the curriculum unpacked for them in a way they can understand.
  • Use the curriculum to help plan their learning.
  • Be able to report to their parents in real time, about how they are going with their learning.
