What if programmes are personalised?

This approach helps teachers on working with learners to design a learning programme that is tailor-made to suit them best. Here are the five elements of the personalised learning approach.

Personalised Learning

The Five Elements

Each individual child is taken into account.
Every-thing is differentiated
& inclusive.

A Question Mark
The curriculum
is balanced for
each learner.
The curriculum
is prioritised
with learners.
Planning is flexible
for all parts of
the programme.

Each individual child is taken into account.

Which means that we as teachers
Find out how learners learn best; their experiences and mindset towards learning; and their unique learning profile of strengths and priorities.
So that our learners
Teachers have important information to assist in personalising the programme.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Be inspired and engaged in their learning.
  • Celebrate their unique identity and feel valued as an individual.
  • Help you uncover what works best for them.
  • Become more self aware of who they are & how they learn.
  • Have a voice in their programme design.

2

Every-thing is differentiated & inclusive.

Which means that we as teachers
Design learning so all learners can access the curriculum at their level and in the style that works best for them.
So that our learners
Feel included and learn at the right level of challenge for them, and in a style that works for them best.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Feel confident in what they are doing.
  • Feel included and an essential part of the classroom.
  • Be learning at the right level for them.
  • Be learning in the way that works best for them.
  • Have adaptable programmes that are responsive to what is going on for them at any time.

The curriculum is balanced for each learner.

Which means that we as teachers
Look at the overall picture of each child, to determine the balance of curriculum that would be best for them.
So that our learners
Can have programmes that are specifically designed for them, where they can focus on their unique balance of stronger and weaker areas.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Have the right balance of curriculum to best suit who they are.
  • Work on their areas of strength and interest, as well as their weaker areas.
  • Have a voice into what topics and learning areas are covered in the classroom programme.
  • Have the freedom to learn in the areas they are most interested in, balanced with others where appropriate.
  • Actively participate and be engaged in what they are doing.

4

The curriculum is prioritised with learners.

Which means that we as teachers
Do not try to get learners to cover everything in each learning area, but we identify the key aspects that will have the biggest impact on the learner overall and prioritise these.
So that our learners
Can maximise their time, and focus on the aspects of learning that will have the biggest impact for them overall.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Be working on the aspects of the curriculum that will give them the most impact overall.
  • Do less, but do it deeper and better.
  • Have ownership over what they are working on.
  • Understand where they should put their energy and effort.
  • Have input into how they work on their priorities.

Planning is flexible for all parts of the programme.

Which means that we as teachers
Plan in a way that gives learners a regular routine and the right balance of programme without limiting their options for what they do and how they use their time.
So that our learners
Can learn what they need, when they need it, for as long as they need, regardless of curriculum area of aspect.

Prioritise this if you want your learners to:

  • Spend their time on the parts of learning that suit them best.
  • Have the flexibility to work on what they need, regardless of the curriculum area or time of day.
  • Have a daily routine that gives them a sense of security.
  • Have teachers available to coach them through their learning.
  • Feel empowered to make their own learning decisions.

What if there were resources to create a personalised programme?

We have created downloadable & printable resources to support teachers' practice so they combine sound pedagogical knowledge with important information about their learners as individuals, to create flexible, responsive programmes that vary depending on the learners.
